Bamberg drop to 2-2 in Eurocup, get weekend off

Brose Baskets Bamberg dropped their second straight game to Aykon TED Ankara in the Eurocup, losing 94-84 at home though they still have good chances to reach the next round. In the Beko BBL, Brose had the weekend off.

The up-coming week sees Bamberg with a week off in the Eurocup, but they travel to EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Wednesday February 5 for a re-match of the Beko BBL Finals from last season in the qualification for the Top Four German Cup. And then Brose host Eisbären Bremerhaven on Saturday February 8 in the league.

Bamberg lose to Ankara again

Bamberg came into the game on January 29 having lost at Ankara a week earlier. And Chris Fleming’s team suffered another defeat, dropping to 2-2 in Group J in a tie for second place with Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari.

Bamberg jumped ahead 8-0 and Zack Wright scored seven points in extending the lead out to 14-6. But Brose gave up the next eight points to tie the game and Ankara grabbed their first lead at 20-19. The Ankara advantage was up to five points before Bamberg trimmed the deficit to 26-25 after one quarter.

Bamberg fell behind 36-30 before getting back to within 36-34. But then Brose gave up the next 13 points to see Ankara build a 49-34 cushion, which was 49-36 at halftime.

Bamberg hit the first five points of the second half and then Casey Jacobsen knocked down his fourth three-pointer to spark a 12-2 run and trim the margin to 56-53. A Jamar Smith triple had Brose within 63-62. After three quarters, it was 65-62.

Rakim Sanders made it 65-64 but Ankara got three three-pointers to increase the lead to 72-64. Bamberg got back to within 72-68 but Ankara used a 9-0 run to pull away and decide the game.

65 percent threes for Ankara too much

Sanders led Bamberg with 15 points while Jacobsen and D’Or Fischer both had 13 points and Wright finished with 10 points. Brose hit 55 percent from three-point range and 52 percent for the game while collecting 25 assists. But Ankara made 13-of-20 three-pointers (65 percent) - including 10 triples combined by Kristaps Valters and Clay Tucker.

“We let them get hot in the first half and it was difficult to stop them in the second half. I think we played a good third quarter but whenever we got a bit closer we couldn’t get any stops and they scored every time,” said Anton Gavel, who had seven points and six assists.

Fleming said he was happy with how his team began the game.

“I think we started really well, just as we wanted. We played really well the first four minutes. We lost the defensive intensity which had given us the lead. Offensively, we held the ball and didn’t move it. We couldn’t get back before the break. After halftime, Sanders really helped us a lot. Fischer as well as we cut into the big deficit. Unfortunately we couldn’t make the stops defensively in the fourth quarter,” said the coach.
